Max arranges romantic dinners for them, serves them drinks by the pool, and drives them around in an open car. Anything to keep his mistress happy in spite of his miserable heart.

Only Max is allowed into Ms. Desmond’s boudoir because she doesn’t care what she looks like for him, covered in face creams with her hair slicked back. Max even loves her enough to give beauty advice to help make her more appealing to other men. He remains loyally and faithfully by her side during her entire pathetic demise, right until the end.

He is certainly one ideal of a subservient male who knows his place and performs his God-given role uncomplaining, with saintly dignity.
